When is Thailand’s rainy season?

thailand rainy season

Rainy season in Thailand is from June – October in the North (Chiang Mai) and in the South (Phuket) it goes from April – October.

Don’t let the rain scare you though, because the bursts of rainfall can last anywhere from 15 minutes to a couple hours. Additionally, the rain doesn’t equal cold, as the tropical climate is warm enough for shorts year round. The rain often cools down an otherwise unbearably hot day, which ends up making outdoor activities more pleasant.

Which month is best to visit Thailand?

The best time to visit Thailand depends on personal preference and comfort. The rain brings cooler days, which makes outdoor activities much more enjoyable. It also brings fewer crowds, making tourist attractions more enjoyable as well. However, scuba diving is best when the water is calm and visibility is good. Here is a summary of the different seasons:

  • Tourist High Season: November – April
  • Tourist Low Season: June – October
  • (North) Dry Season: November – May
  • (North) Rainy Season: June – October
  • (North) Burning Season: February – April
  • (South) Dry Season: November – March
  • (South) Rainy Season: April – October (west coast)
  • (South) Rainy Season: September – December (east coast)

When is Thailand’s shoulder season?

Thailand’s shoulder seasons generally fall between the peak tourist periods and the monsoon seasons. The exact timing can vary slightly depending on the region in Thailand, but generally:

Late February to April: This period is considered the shoulder season between the cool and dry season (November to February) and the onset of the hot season. During this time, temperatures are rising, but it’s not yet the peak of the hot season. Note that April can be quite hot, especially towards the end.

September to October: This is another shoulder season between the monsoon season (June to October) and the cool and dry season. The rainy season is winding down, and the weather is transitioning to drier conditions. While there may still be occasional rain, it is not as intense as the peak monsoon months.

During these shoulder seasons, you may find fewer tourists, and accommodation prices might be more reasonable compared to peak times. However, it’s essential to be aware that weather conditions can be somewhat unpredictable, and there is still a chance of rain, especially in September and October, which are towards the end of the monsoon season.

What is the cheapest time to visit Thailand?

The cheapest time to visit Thailand is generally during the monsoon season, which occurs from June to October. However, there are some considerations to keep in mind:

September and October: These months are often the cheapest, as they mark the end of the monsoon season. While there might still be some rain, prices for accommodations and flights tend to be lower, and you can take advantage of the lush greenery and fewer crowds.

Avoiding Peak Tourist Season: If you want to save money and avoid crowds, it’s best to steer clear of the peak tourist season, which typically occurs from November to February. During these months, the weather is pleasant, but prices for accommodations and flights are higher due to increased demand.

When is the best time to visit the islands/ beaches?

The best time to visit Thailand islands, particularly those in the Andaman Sea (west coast) and the Gulf of Thailand (east coast), depends on the specific experiences you’re seeking. For more information regarding which islands to visit and how to get there, check out my Complete Guide to Thailand’s Islands.

Gulf of Thailand Islands (Koh Tao, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan)

Best Time: December to August

Reason: The dry season prevails during these months, providing excellent conditions for beachgoers. September is often transitional, with the possibility of some rain.

Peak Season: December to February is peak, especially around the Christmas and New Year holidays. July and August have increased crowds as well due to the European and American summer break. September usually hits the sweet spot for both crowds and weather.

Rainy Season: September to November

While prices may be lower during the monsoon season, heavy rainfall can lead to rough seas and limited water activities. Some businesses and accommodations on smaller islands might close during this time.

Andaman Sea Islands (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta)

Best Time: November to April

Reason: This period is the dry season, characterized by lower humidity and less rainfall. The sea is calm, and the weather is suitable for beach activities, snorkeling, and diving.

Peak Season: December to January, with increased prices and more tourists.

Rainy Season: May to October (peaking in June to September)

It’s crucial to note that weather patterns can vary, and climate conditions might not be the same on all islands. Always check specific weather forecasts for the islands you plan to visit.

In summary, if you want to enjoy sunny weather and vibrant marine activities, the dry season is the best time. If you’re looking for budget travel and don’t mind occasional rain, you might consider the shoulder seasons with lower prices, but be aware of the potential impact of the monsoon.

Additionally, certain marine life, such as whale sharks, may have specific migration patterns that could influence the best time for diving to see particular species. Consult with local dive operators and guides for the most up-to-date information.

Burning Season

The burning season in Northern Thailand typically occurs between February and April each year.

Here are some important things to know about the burning season in Northern Thailand:

  1. Causes: The main cause of the burning season is agricultural burning, where farmers burn crop residues and clear land for the next planting season. This practice is deeply rooted in traditional farming methods, despite being illegal and actually terrible for the soil and environment.
  2. Air Pollution: The burning season leads to a significant increase in air pollution levels, with thick haze blanketing cities and rural areas alike. The air quality can become hazardous, with high concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5) and other pollutants.
  3. Health Concerns: The poor air quality during the burning season can have serious health implications, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions. Symptoms may include coughing, difficulty breathing, and eye irritation.
  4. Travel Advisories: During the peak of the burning season, it is recommended that people either limit outdoor activities or travel somewhere else until the air quality is better.
  5. Visibility: The haze can significantly reduce visibility, posing challenges for transportation, both on roads and in the air. Some airports may experience flight delays or cancellations due to poor visibility.
  6. Efforts to Mitigate: The Thai government and local authorities have been making efforts to discourage agricultural burning and promote alternative methods of waste disposal or crop residue management. However, changing long-standing practices has been a challenge.

Truthfully, it’s advisable to avoid traveling to northern Thailand during burning season because of the serious health risks, and frankly, it’s a vibe killer.
