Complete Guide to Best Vegan Food in Tirana, Albania (2025)

Vegan food in Tirana, Albania is very hard to find and options are really limited. While Tirana offers a variety of delicious dishes, finding vegan and vegetarian options is a challenge as of 2024. With traditional Albanian cuisine centering around meat, cheese, and dairy, plant-based choices are relatively limited.

However, for those committed to a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, there are still some options to explore. In this guide, I’ll take you through the best vegan and vegetarian spots in Tirana, showing you where to find vegan and vegetarian food in this meat and dairy loving city.

Vegan Food in Tirana

I’m going to be honest, the vegan and vegetarian options in Albania are bleak. Even in the main capital city of Tirana, there is not a single restaurant that is 100% vegan. There are two that are vegetarian (with vegan options), one of which only serves pita falafel and fries.

Happy Belly Eat Smart

Happy Belly / Eat Smart Vegan Food in Tirana, Albania

This very small, 8-person capacity restaurant offers vegan and vegetarian breakfast and lunch, and smoothies/chia pudding. It is conveniently located between the main square and Blloku. The food is healthy and tasty, but I thought it was a little too expensive for what it is.

Bitter Bistro

Bitter Bistro and cafe is owned by a super nice American guy. It is located a few minutes walk from the main square. While they have coffee (sometimes they have soy milk), they have a separate vegetarian/vegan menu featuring breakfast/brunch, lunch, and dinner. Their outdoor patio (with a retractable roof) is a great place to hang out and enjoy the mediterranean weather.

Falafel House

Serving only pita falafel and fries, it’s technically vegan if you don’t get the sauce/ yogurt. It’s pretty cheap and fills the belly. This small food stall is conveniently located between the main square and Blloku – there are no tables so it’s take-away only.

MUGO Tirana

Mugo (menu) is a restaurant/ bar/ cafe that is located right next door to Mulliri Gourmet in the Blloku neighborhood. One of the great parts about Tirana is that the restaurants double as bars and cafes – I guess that’s a triple threat.

Truthfully, they don’t have many vegan options, but they do have a couple. (It’s slim pickin’s in Albania, remember). In the morning, this is a serene cafe serving both coffee (no soy milk) and brunch with a couple vegan/ vegetarian options, such as avocado toast. In the evening, they serve delicious cocktails and dinner, such as a vegan sushi and stir fry.

The outdoor patio is small, but the windows open to transform the building into one large patio. The chairs are comfortable and the lush greenery provides a really nice atmosphere to hang out in.

Vegan Cafes & Sweets in Tirana

Panja Bakery

Panja is a gluten-free and lactose-free bakery located a few minutes from the main square in Tirana. Only a couple items are vegan, so for some treats, you must specifically order vegan in advance. The items are quite expensive for Tirana, but you are getting very good quality.

Hana Cafe

Hana Cafe offers coffee and sweets. Only a couple items are vegan, such as the banana bread and chocolate chip cookies. While delicious, they are quite expensive ($3+).

Mulliri Gourmet – Blloku

This is my favorite cafe in Tirana, Albania. Despite being a chain, this location in Blloku offers good coffee and a comfortable, lively atmosphere. They have a couple vegan breakfast/ brunch/ food items, which includes avocado toast. They also have soy milk. (Most of the locations in this chain offer soy milk, whereas most cafes in Tirana do not).

Mulliri Gourmet has a fully outdoor patio with comfortable chairs and a dozen large umbrellas, providing ample shade for just about every table, without making you feel like you are still inside.

The cafe is busiest during late morning and early afternoon, often making it hard to find a table, especially on Sunday.

Antigua Specialty Coffee

Antigua is a cute and minimalist cafe is located in Blloku near the Grand Park offers specialty coffee and pastries (no breakfast food unfortunately). Not only do they have really cute ceramic mugs, but they have several kinds of plant-based milks!

The spacious and quiet atmosphere inside makes this a good place to bring your laptop and work for a couple hours. They have a few tables on the sidewalk where you can sit there and watch the city go by.

FABRIKA Ice Cream

This ice cream shop is located on the boulevard a 5-minute walk from the main square. They offer 8 vegan flavors which are delicious and change periodically. They offer cones and cups.

Produce Market in Tirana, Albania

If finding vegan or vegetarian food is too frustrating and disappointing in Albania (it is!!!) you should cook your own meals. Check out my Complete Guide to Seasonal Produce in Albania: Fruits, Vegetables, & More.

Decorating the streets of Tirana are fresh produce markets. They are small open-air markets that sell fresh vegetables, fruit, nuts, honey, and other food items. You can find an abundance of fresh produce to make your own delicious and healthy vegan and vegetarian meals. Most things are sold by the kilo, so the handwritten number is the price per kilo

While the vegan food in Tirana, Albania remains very limited and disappointing as of 2024, there are a couple options for those vegetarian and vegan travelers. Cooking your own food is the most convenient and affordable way to eat vegan food in Tirana, Albania.
