Complete Guide to Seasonal Produce in Albania: Fruits, Vegetables, & More
The seasonal produce in Albania provides an abundance of fresh and healthy fruits, vegetables, and nuts year round.
Decorating the streets of Tirana, Albania (and other cities and villages in Albania) are fresh produce markets. They are small open-air markets that sell fresh vegetables, fruit, nuts, honey, and other food items. Most of the food in these produce stands is imported from around the region (Balkans and Europe). They also have fruit from South America, such as bananas and avocado.

Food Available Year-Round in Albania

Albania has an abundance of nuts, which are collected in the fall and can be consumed year round. They include:
- Walnuts
- Hazelnuts
- Almonds
- Chestnuts
- Peanuts
The hand written numbers are the price (Lek) per kilo.
A lot of produce is imported to Albania, so it’s easy to find fresh greens even in the middle of winter. Things like lettuce, green onion, and red and green peppers are found in every produce stand all year. Onions, potatoes, and garlic are common in Albanian cuisine and are available year round.
Albanian cuisine uses many different kinds of beans and lentils, especially large white beans called plantain beans. Dried beans can be purchased by the kilo at many produce stands and markets.
A few varieties of olives are widely available in Albania, which makes sense given the Mediterranean location.
Honey is widely produced in Albania, and it’s sold in glass jars at produce stands. There is a darker honey that is supposed to be healthier for you and is more expensive.
Plants such as mountain tea, sage tea, and wild rose are very common, and can be purchased from locals selling their own harvests on the sidewalks and at produce stands.
Seasonal Produce in Albania: Summer

- Bright red strawberries and juicy red cherries are abundant May – July.
- The strawberries are REAL! They are sweet and red and soft all the way through (unlike the blasphemous strawberries that are found in the USA, which are hard and white in the center and taste like strawberry flavored water. Awful.)
- Apricot and plums are available May – July.Â
- Figs, blackberries, wild blueberries, and raspberries come into season in July and August.
- Tomatoes, okra, and eggplant are plentiful from May – September.
Seasonal Produce in Albania: Fall and Winter

- Grapes are everywhere from August – November
- Pumpkin and Squash are plentiful from September – January
- Apples are available October through April, but imported apples can be found in the summer months as well.Â
- Pomegranate are joyfully celebrated from September – February
- Citrus fruit (oranges, mandarine, lemon) join the party from December – March
- Chestnuts! In the winter, locals roast chestnuts over an open fire on the sidewalks of Tirana, and you can purchase some for only one euro! And they are delicious!

Imported Produce
The below fruits are commonly found in produce stands in Albania. However, the quality is often poor, but you can find some good ones every now and then.
- Avocado
- Mango
- Pineapple
- Banana
Hard to Find in Albania
- Kale – I found kale only a few times even though I searched for it all winter
- Basil – not popular in Albanian cooking, hard to find
- Mushrooms – cant find other kinds besides regular white mushrooms, which aren’t sold everywhere.
- Cilantro – I might have seen this once.
- Vegetarian/vegan products (tofu, tempeh, miso paste, and others can be found at specialty stores that cater to expats/ imported food.
- Nutritional yeast is really hard to find (if not impossible)
- Vanilla extract – I don’t know how they don’t have vanilla extract here, but they don’t. Searched every store. I eventually bought some in another country.
- Fermented food – I searched and searched and only found pickles.
